I was searching for new R&B music on Tidal when I stumbled upon a soul band named The Internet. I immediately thought, “Damn, that’s a cool name for a band.” So I decided to check out Ego Death. Damn, that’s a cool name for an album.
Released earlier this summer, Ego Death is The Internet’s third album released through Odd Future records. Songs like “For The World” and “Something’s Missing” capture that soothing sound of old school R&B while a song like “Special Affair” keeps it more modern. Ego Trip is beautifully produced and Syd tha Kid’s vocals are enticing and seductive.
Syd Tha Kid, the female Casanova, tells various stories about the dating stages in today’s society. For example, “Just Sayin/I Tried” is a two part story that begins with the tough breakup stage. Lyrics like “you fucked up/ now I don’t even want you/And I noticed that I’m better off without you,” tell her perspective as she dumps a no good girlfriend. The second part of the song goes into the regret and reflection stage that happens post breakup as she repeats “I tried, I tried” throughout the hook.
In a genre that is widely said to be dying out, The Internet adds a spark of hope for today’s R&B. Twenty years from now, we’ll playing this album telling our kids “What y’all know about that? This is that good music! Not like that trash y’all listen to these days!”
